1965 Ford Mustang GT K-Code 2-Door Convertible
Chassis No. 5F08K777151
The original “ponycar,” the Ford Mustang, was largely the brainchild of Lee Iacocca. It pioneered the long-hood/short-deck proportions that would be imitated by its competitors. Based on Falcon chassis and Fairlane drivetrain components, the car was a marketing sensation. The Mustang was introduced to the public on April 17, 1964 as a 1965 model going on to achieve a record 680,000 sales during its first model year.
Nearly 73 percent of Mustang buyers ordered one of the optional V-8 engines. The recipe for success was that the new car offered something for everyone – simple economy car to all-out performance machine. Simply check-off the blocks on the option sheet. Some buyers wanted even more!
Among the first performance-oriented Mustangs was the “K-Code” which denotes the 289cid, 271hp solid lifter V-8. K-Codes were built for performance – power steering, power brakes and air conditioning were not available. A four-speed manual transmission was made mandatory and the normal 12-month/12,000-mile warranty was slashed to just 4-months and 4,000 miles. Any participation in competition (racing) voided the limited warranty. K-Codes were the precursor to and became the basis of the legendary Shelby Mustang GT350 from 1965-1967.
According to its owner, this numbers-matching hi-po Mustang is finished in its original colors of Wimbledon White over a red deluxe pony interior. It is powered by its as-built 289cid V-8 mated to a toploader 4-speed manual transmission. A dealer-installed “Cobra kit” raises horsepower to 314 thanks to tri-power carbs, aluminum intake, aluminum valve covers and aluminum breather.
This highly-optioned example includes the GT package, disc brakes, dual-point distributor, sway bar, Rally-Pac gauges, and an AM radio with reverb. Stainless exhaust and brake linings have been added, too. The owner adds that many NOS parts were used in the restoration of more than 2,000 hours to Mustang Club of America judging standards. The car is listed in the HiPo Registry.
