1991 Shelby Series I Supercharged Convertible

Carrol Shelby longed to build a modern Cobra. The result was the Shelby Series I; the first all-new Shelby design since the 1960's. Unveiled at the 1997 Los Angeles Auto Show, it was produced by Shelby American with oversight by General Motors which provided the powerplant and many components for production. Powered by a 320hp Oldsmobile Aurora 4.0-litre V-8, the first production cars were delivered in 1999. The aluminum chassis is fitted with a 130-pound carbon fiber body and hood. The manual gearbox is from the Corvette, suspension is fully-independent and massive four-wheel disc brakes provide stopping power. Production ceased in 2003 after just 249 were produced.

During the production run, Venture Corporation purchased Shelby American. That purchase included the rights to the Series I model, but not the rights to produce the continuation series Shelby Cobras. Venture Corporation declared bankruptcy and in 2004, Shelby Automobiles, Inc., purchased the Series I assets which included sufficient components to produce several automobiles.

The cars were unable to be certified by the Federal Government since the 1999 Federal Motor Vehicle Safey Standards Certificate had expired. The remaining Series I vehicles were completed as component cars without engine or transmission. Built in 2005, the component cars, like this example, are identified with a seven-digit CSX5000 series VIN compared to the seventeen-digit number of the earlier production cars.

Finished in Centennial Silver over black and gray leather, this car is one of twelve component cars produced. It is fitted with all available options for the Series I model including the supercharged Aurora V-8, 6-speed manual transmission, air conditioning, leather interior, GT sway bar, power windows, fog lights, accessory soft-top, Monsoon premium AM/FM/CD stereo, four-piston disc brakes, scrub shield, radiator screen, roll bar, headers and exhaust. It remains in original, preserved condition from new.
