1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz 2-Door Convertible
Chassis No. 59E038951
Without a doubt the pinnacle of 1950's excess, the 1959 Cadillac styled by Dave Holls, featured Detroit's highest fins; a craze begun by Cadillac after WWII. Originally inspired by P-38 Lightning aircraft and a trademark of acclaimed designer Harley Earl, the ever-increasing fins were in response to Virgil Exner's Chrysler styling known as the “Forward Look,” that sent the rest of Detroit back to the drawing boards. According to the late-Holls, the massive fins were the result of a directive from top management at General Motors that the company was not to be outdone . . . by anyone!
Like its sisters the Buick Skylark and the Oldsmobile Fiesta, the first Eldorado was shown to the public at GM's Motorama in 1953 as a limited-production convertible available in small numbers at a high price. Initially, the Eldo was nearly twice the price of its Series 62 stablemate demonstrating just how special the model was in the Cadillac lineup. Cadillac called the '59, “The New Standard of the World in Splendor!” They weren't exaggerating.
Despite building over 138,000 Cadillacs in 1959, less than one percent - 1,320 - were Eldorado Biarritz Convertibles. Eldorados included a special version of Cadillacs 390cid V-8 producing 340hp through triple carburetors and virtually every power convenience of the era was included as standard or available optionally adding to the exclusivity of the top-of-the-line model.
The Eldorado Biarritz Convertible offered for sale is finished in a striking combination of Seminole Red over a white leather interior with red accents. Full power accessories like steering brakes, and windows are included. More importantly, it is one of 99 equipped with factory bucket seats and a further one of 409 equipped with factory air conditioning. In addition to its fabulous color combination, this is one of the most desirable spec Eldorado Biarritz convertibles available for sale.
