1939 MG TB
The 1939 MG TB is rare with less than 380 produced. The example being offered is from the private collection of MG historian, restorer and notable authority on the Marque, Carl Meyer.
Carl has supplied to us the history of his purchase, restoration and ownership of this rare MG model. The following is, in his own words, the provenance since his purchase:
In 2011 I received a phone call from Mark McCarty a professional photographer asking if
he could use our XK120 Jaguar for a photo shoot with a model from NYC. That sounded
interesting so we agreed to the date and time. While at his location we saw an MG TB in the
carriage house behind his home. Partially restored but needing a lot of TLC. I told Mark if he
was unable to complete it I would come to its rescue. A few years later he called and said he
had done nothing to the car in the interim. With a daughter going to college he could use a little
extra cash so we made a deal. The rescue was on.
The tub and engine had been installed on the frame but the tub was not aligned properly.
As a result we removed it and the engine and basically began a frame up restoration. After
examining the so called rebuilt engine we found a bad cylinder wall which required a resleeve.
As a result the engine was completely rebuilt. Brakes and suspension were rebuilt, instruments
were rebuilt by Craig Seabrook and installed in a walnut dash made by a friend. Red leather
interior kit for a TC by Moss was used but worked out well even though the TB is 4 inches
narrower. The radiator was recored and all chrome was redone. I had received favorable
comments about the two tone paint scheme used on my blue PB and another TB in red so I
decided to use black with gun metal grey metallic on this TB. This is correct for a pre war car.
The wheels were a mess so I got a set from Bill Hentzen ( well known for a Tickford he had
restored) who also provided the pre war air pump. Probably should have new tires if it is to be
driven regularly. Tools were restored by my friend who did the dash. Brochures and manuals
either came with the car or were scoured on e-bay. Top is a stayfast from Moss. The driving
lamp is correct for the car and rare.
