Mercedes-Benz offered the SL65 Black Series as a special high-performance version of what is internally referred to as its R230 SL-Class. Unlike other SL variants, the Black Series was not made available as a convertible. With performance the number one priority, the Black Series was hardtop-only as the folding roof mechanism for the convertible was deemed too heavy.

In addition to the unique fixed roof, the Black Series was endowed with numerous improvements to the drivetrain, suspension and aerodynamics. A tuned version of M-B's M275 6.0-litre AMG V-12 generating 661hp and 738lb ft of torque drives the rear wheels via a 5-speed automatic gearbox. Production was limited to 350 examples of which 175, like this car, came to the United States.

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the SL65 AMG Black Series at Monterrey in 2008. Compared to its lesser stablemates, the turbochargers are twelve per cent larger with optimized wastegate ducts permitting increased airflow. Intake air ducts and the exhaust system are modified to improve response and reduce the exhaust gas backpressure. The improvements allow for 57hp higher output that the standard model. In addition, the Black Series is 551 pounds lighter than the standard SL65 AMG thanks to the elimination of the foldable roof mechanism. A retractable spoiler and rear apron with diffuser fins are added improved aerodynamics.

According to Mercedes-Benz, top speed is limited to 200mph and a 0-62mph time of 3.8 seconds is expected. The car features the AMG Speedshift Plus 5-speed automatic transmission which enables shift times 25 percent quicker than the “M1” mode. The Black Series front axle track is 97mm wider and 85mm wider at the rear than the standard model and tires are uprated to 265/3519 front and 325/30R20 rear on special AMG light alloy wheels. 6-pistion front brakes and 4-piston rear brakes along with a special coilover suspension by KW complete the package.
