George Maffey's Ownership History Story:
I took care of 9989 for over a quarter century. I was living In Como Italy and my job for a multi national was running three factories in northern Italy. My factory manager from Mandello grew up with a fellow who had a Ferrari shop in Torino. I found an ad for the GTC and asked how to find the brokers shop. I was directed to drive to the Torino prison, drive along the tall stone wall to the end where there was a drive thru car wash...enter and drive the wrong way down the exit until I got to a large steel door...behind the door was a pretty neat Ferrari shop.....Who would think of looking there !!!
I looked at the GTC, agreed a price and made another trip to an evening appointment at a Torino "DMV" where it took over an hour typing a sales contract. The car owner was a very neat small fellow who couldn't drive the GTC. ...had the mechanic take him for rides...he owned an antique Rolls doctors coupe and had a Bugatti engine on a stand in his bedroom. He drove a pretty rough Citroen DS station wagon from which he sold coffee. When we were asked for our documents he reached between his his legs and retrieved a plastic bag with his docs.....looked at me and said " the thieves never look there"
I had the car awhile and contacted the mechanic about fixing a small amount of smoke on startup...took the car back to him for valve seals..The next time I saw it the engine was spread neatly on his bench...complete rebuild ..new pistons from the UK...when finished, a very strong running machine.
I returned to Dana Point, southern Calif. and flew the GTC there I the belly of a 747. My son and I drove it to the '94 Montery Historic Salute to Ferrari. Also showed it at the '97 LosAngeles Rodeo Drive event where they introduced the Maranello.
Retired in my birthplace on Lake Champlain with my beloved GTC only to find two other GTC's within 40 miles. One was purchased in Switzerland by a local doctor and was one serial number off from my 9989. What's the possibility that three GTC's would be within 40 miles of each other in the North Country.
I live quite close to the Saratoga Auto Museum and have been a member for some time. At a 2009 Saratoga Fall Ferrari Festival organized by my friend Dick Fritz, 9989 was awarded Best Preserved Ferrari.
I am happy that this Ferrari continues to be well taken care of and the Saratoga Museum continues its fine programs.
